Fergie reveals Ferdinand pride
07 Feb 2010 - 11:34:07
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed the club's pride after Rio Ferdinand was named as England's new captain.
Ferdinand will step up from his vice-captaincy role in a World Cup year after head coach Fabio Capello stripped Chelsea's John Terry of the international armband following the lurid allegations surrounding his private life.
"It's great for Manchester United to have one of our players captaining England," said Ferguson.
"Over the years we've had Gary (Neville), Bobby Charlton and Bryan Robson for 60-odd games or something so we're very proud of that."
Meanwhile, Ferguson has praised the way Ferdinand bounced back from his own high-profile misdemeanour to become a leader for both club and country.
In 2003 the defender he was fined and banned for eight months after he missed a drugs test.
"From the mistake he made, he bounced back and came back a lot better," added Ferguson.
Ferdinand has previously captained England when he was handed the armband by Capello for a friendly against France in March 2008.
