    Fergie relishes world success

    22 Dec 2008 - 08:05:32

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for his side after they beat LDU Quito 1-0 to be crowned FIFA Club World Cup champions.

The Red Devils overcame the sending-off of Nemanja Vidic to seal victory in Yokohama, with Wayne Rooney netting the only goal of the game.

Ferguson said afterwards: "I definitely felt we were heading for extra-time.

"Another half an hour with ten men would have been a long road and if we had conceded we would have lost.

"But we did still try to win, which is a measure of the ambitious players we have and our collective spirit came through in the end.

"We should be proud of what we have done here. In 30 years' time, people will be able to look back and see Manchester United's name on the trophy.

"This should be a good springboard for us now, because it would have been difficult to go to Stoke with a beaten team.

"Now there will be a bounce in the club. It won't be easy, no game in the Premier League is.

"But it gives us a platform to get some real purpose in our game and chase the leaders."

Of matchwinner Rooney, Ferguson added: "He was man of the match, no question. He deserved it and was unlucky not to score two or three.

"It was a magnificent goal. I have seen him do that quite a lot and it was just another example of the ability he has."
