Fergie predicts Evans impact
10 Oct 2008 - 08:32:22
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes defender Jonny Evans has the brightest of futures ahead of him at Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old Northern Ireland international has been introduced slowly into the first team in recent seasons by Ferguson.
But the veteran Scot is confident the promising central defender will go on to become a fixture at the heart of the United defence for years to come.
Evans has started two high-profile games for the Red Devils this season - against Villarreal in the Champions League and Chelsea in the Premier League.
"Jonny Evans will be a centre-half in Manchester United's future, no question about that," said Ferguson.
"He's 20 years old, Rio (Ferdinand) is 30 now, (Nemanja) Vidic is 27, so in a few years' time Evans' career here is absolutely guaranteed.
"It was a good night for him against Villarreal in the Champions League. That was an indication of his quality.
"He already has 11 or so caps, even though he's only 20. He'll be a fixture for Northern Ireland. I imagine he'll be their captain in time."
