    Fergie makes Ronaldo plea

    12 Nov 2006 - 14:32:07

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Portugal decide they can do without Cristiano Ronaldo this week.

The inspirational winger picked up an ankle injury as United won 1-0 at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday evening and Ferguson is keen for him to miss his country's midweek Euro 2008 qualifier.

"It's against Kazakhstan so you'd have thought Portugal could handle that without Ronaldo," said Ferguson.

"If he's got one of these injuries that's 50-50, I hope he doesn't play."

Ronaldo had to be substituted in the closing stages of the Ewood Park clash, while Gary Neville will miss England's friendly in Holland after suffering a recurrence of a calf injury in the same game.
