Fergie lets a few things slip
Sir Alex Ferguson was in party mood at the club's player of the year awards last night and TEAMtalk's Matty Briggs reflects on his thoughts. It's not often you can get a straight answer from Sir Alex regarding his transfer plans, but get the claret flowing and your chances improve significantly. The United gaffer was in jovial mood at the awards, aired by MUTV, and he let a few things slip. In a refreshingly honest interview Fergie revealed Jonny Evans is close to penning a new deal and he admitted it's time to "freshen up one or two players" at Old Trafford. The title has almost slipped through the champions' grasp after a less than vintage campaign, but regardless of whether United retain the title or not Fergie has recognised he needs an injection of talent. The Scot also knows that there will also be some big departures too. Wayne Rooney swept the boards at the awards night after stepping up to the plate and exceeding expectations this term, but fellow striker Dimitar Berbatov looks a beaten man. The Bulgarian simply hasn't cut it this term and Fergie has almost certainly lost patience with him. Berbatov is history at United and there will be no takers in the Premier League either, but he might just find one or two suitors back in the Bundesliga, where he made his name with Bayer Leverkusen. So Fergie will definitely need a new frontman and Wolfsburg ace Edin Dzeko should be top of his shopping list. Dzeko is emerging as one of the hottest properties in Europe and there could well be an almighty scramble for his services in the summer, so United must break the bank to land the Bosnia international. He has a terrific goalscoring record, showed he can hack it with the best in the Champions League this season and he would be a huge hit in the Premier League. Meanwhile, on the departure list could well be Nemanja Vidic. His wife is believed to be unsettled in sunny Manchester and a move to Europe and sunnier climes look likely. But Fergie, although he will need cover, is a big fan of Evans and his new long-term deal reflects the faith Fergie has placed in the young Irishman. There certainly won't be a major overhaul at Old Trafford - but expect a couple of astute signings to strengthen United ahead of next season.
