Ferguson hopeful over Rooney
31 Mar 2010 - 08:04:24
Sir Alex Ferguson does not believe Wayne Rooney's ankle injury is 'terribly serious' after he limped out of Manchester United's Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.
The United and England star scored his side's second-minute goal in the 2-1 quarter-final first leg defeat on Tuesday night but left the Allianz Arena on crutches after turning his ankle in the final moments of the match,
Rooney was helped off the pitch at full-time and was in obvious pain as he went down the tunnel.
However, Ferguson has suggested that the injury will not be a serious blow to United's chances of Premier League and Champions League glory.
Rooney's participation in the World Cup was also feared to be in jeopardy in the immediate aftermath of the injury and England coach Fabio Capello will be anxiously awaiting news on his key player.
"He's obviously hurt his ankle. It's too early to say (but) I don't think it's terribly serious," said Ferguson in his post-match press conference.
United face Chelsea in a Premier League title showdown on Saturday before taking on Bayern in the second leg of their European quarter-final next Wednesday.
Asked whether Rooney would be fit to face Chelsea, Ferguson replied: "I can't answer that, we will know better on Wednesday."
