Fergie hopes Scholes plays on
17 Sep 2009 - 09:36:58
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has urged Paul Scholes to extend his Old Trafford stay.
The 34-year-old's current United contract expires at the end of this season and there have been rumours that Scholes will opt to wind down his career with Oldham Athletic next term.
However, Ferguson hopes the midfielder, who scored the only goal in Tuesday's Champions League win at Besiktas, will change his mind.
The veteran Scottish manager said: "I don't think this is Paul's last season, not the way that he plays. He isn't the type to burst in to the penalty box anymore, is he?
"It's difficult to say (how long he can go on) because it's still only September, but I'm seeing the fresh Scholesy and the best time to use him is when he's fresh.
"He won't be playing the whole season but, if I get 25 games out of him at the level we saw (in the 3-1 victory at Tottenham) on Saturday, I'll be delighted with that.
"I've read that stuff about him (playing for) Oldham in his last year - no chance. He isn't going to drop through the leagues, I'm sure of it."
