Fergie happy with PFA list
Published: 14 Apr 2009 - 20:40:12
Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that Manchester United's domination of the PFA awards are justified. Five United player have made the finally shortlist of six players with only Liverpool's Steven Gerrard preventing a clean-sweep. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has suggested that if the awards were voted on now, rather than earlier this year, things would have been different. But Ferguson has been quick to dismiss the claims and thinks all five of his players - Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic, Ryan Giggs, Edwin van der Sar and Rio Ferdinand - are all worthy nominees. "It is valid to have five contenders," insisted Ferguson. "If we are talking about current form, Arsene cannot just go back two or three games. "The PFA awards are always done early. That has been noted in the past. Votes are collected in January or February. I actually think they should be done later." Ferguson admits he cannot pick between any of his players this year and would not like to pick his own top man this season. "It is difficult to choose a player of the year," he continued. "We have had some good performances this season. Giggs, Vidic, Darren Fletcher, John O'Shea and Edwin van der Sar have all done well. "Vidic has had an exceptional season and Giggs just amazes you every time. But it is difficult to say what impact how many players you have got in these things actually has. "In 1999 when we won the Treble, we never won an award. I don't think too much emphasis should be placed on it."
