    Fergie hails nerveless United

    25 Apr 2010 - 10:34:30

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson hailed his side's nerveless performance after they returned to the top of the Premier League table following a priceless 3-1 victory over Tottenham.

Two Ryan Giggs penalties and a well-taken effort from Nani were enough for the Red Devils to leapfrog an inactive Chelsea at the summit at a vital point in the season.

In a game littered with errors which fell well short of the classic many had predicted, United - minus the injured Wayne Rooney - called on all their experience to keep their nerve and win.

"We played well, particularly in the second half which was important, but the key thing was we kept our nerve," explained Ferguson, who had to wait until Giggs' first spot-kick in the 58th minute to see the deadlock broken.

"There was no sign of any nerves throughout the game which was great to see. It's a good quality to have at this vital time of the season.

"This game was a big hurdle to get over - everyone saw how well Spurs played against Arsenal and Chelsea and we've probably beaten the league's in-form side today - so we're pleased.

"I'm just glad we've got our game out the way. We've picked up the three points and we're sitting top of the league. I can't ask for any more than that."

The Red Devils are now two points clear of Chelsea, whose game in hand is at home to Stoke City on Sunday afternoon.
