Fergie hails in-form Scholes

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson thinks Paul Scholes is in the running to win the 2006-07 Footballer of the Year award.

The 32-year-old United midfielder was sidelined for much of last term with an eye injury, but has returned to the first team this season and his excellent form has helped Ferguson's side move six points clear of Chelsea at the top of the Premiership table.

"He's scored five goals this season and that's up with the best of them in the country in that role," said Ferguson.

"His football brain and the football he produces at times is marvellous.

"It would be great for him to be rewarded."
