    Fergie hails centurion Giggs

    09 Dec 2007 - 12:39:46

Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to the service Ryan Giggs has given Manchester United after the winger became the 11th player to score 100 league goals in the club's history.

The 34-year-old Welshman put the Red Devils on the road to a comfortable 4-1 victory over Derby County on Saturday with a 40th minute opener.

Afterwards, Ferguson was unhappy that Giggs' achievement was not relayed to the Old Trafford crowd via the stadium announcer but hailed the contribution of the veteran wideman.

Giggs joined an elite group containing Bobby Charlton, George Best and Dennis Law with his achievement.

"I'm surprised there was no announcement," said Ferguson.

"Maybe no-one knew but I certainly did. It's a fantastic achievement, absolutely marvellous.

"Not many players have scored 100 league goals but the service Ryan has given us, quite apart from the goals, is outstanding."

Giggs himself added: "Obviously I'm really pleased to have scored 100 league goals.

"It's a great achievement and I'm pleased that I eventually got there."
