Fergie doubts Berbatov deal
29 Aug 2008 - 07:52:43
Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he is "less optimistic" about the prospect of bringing Dimitar Berbatov to Manchester United before the transfer window closes.
United have reportedly seen a £20.5million bid for the unsettled striker rejected by Tottenham Hotspur in recent days and the veteran Scot is unsure whether the two clubs can agree a fee before Monday's transfer deadline.
Spurs are believed to want closer to £30million for Berbatov, who was left out of their squad for last weekend's game with Sunderland after coach Juande Ramos claimed he wasn't focused enough.
But Ferguson has suggested the Old Trafford club are unwilling to match Spurs' valuation of the 27-year-old Bulgaria international.
"I'm less optimistic so we'll carry on," he said. "I've no idea what's going on.
"It's very hard to get communication with some people in life."
Meanwhile, reports claims Berbatov's agent Emil Danchev is set to hold emergency talks with Spurs officials on Friday in a bid to resolve the stand off.
Elsewhere, United have cancelled the contract of China striker Dong Fangzhuo by mutual consent.
The 23-year-old international still had two years remaining on his Old Trafford deal, but made just three first-team appearances following his arrival in 2004.
