    Fergie delight at response

    17 Feb 2008 - 12:33:09

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed the response of his Manchester United players to last weekend's derby defeat after they put Arsenal to the sword in the FA Cup.

The top two in the Premier League clashed in the fifth round at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, but it was United who ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Two goals from Darren Fletcher and further strikes from Nani and Wayne Rooney saw the Red Devils overcome ten-man opposition with relative ease.

Afterwards, Ferguson praised the spirit of his side after they bounced back from last Sunday's 2-1 derby defeat to Manchester City in a match which marked the 50th anniversary of the Munich air crash.

"It was a really fantastic performance. The players looked great. They showed tenacity and the passing was terrific," he enthused.

"They were so disappointed with themselves (last weekend) on a really important day. I think all the emotions of the week probably caught up with them.

"But today they've made amends for that with a marvellous performance."

Meanwhile, Ferguson hit out at Arsenal captain William Gallas after he escaped action despite appearing to kick out at Nani during the second half.

The Gunners had already lost Emmanuel Eboue to a straight red card and Alan Wiley decided to take no action.

"I thought Gallas should have been sent off. The referee must have a look at that again," he fumed.

"He kicked Nani from behind and the referee called both over because they sized each other up. He should have been red-carded."
