Sir Alex Ferguson hit out at the home fans at Old Trafford after Manchester United made hard work of a 1-0 win over Birmingham City.
Carlos Tevez netted the only goal of the game midway through the first half, before United struggled to kill off a resolute Blues outfit.
Ferguson fumed: "The crowd were dead. It was like a funeral it was so quiet.
"You need the crowd to create a good atmosphere. It is all right saying the players can make the crowd respond, but in some situations, like this one, the crowd have to get behind the players.
"I think there have been days like this in the past. It happened some years ago, when we were dominant. The crowd have come to be entertained. It doesn't help us."
Meanwhile, United's matchwinner against the Blues, Tevez, is a doubt for the FA Cup third round clash with Aston Villa due to an ankle injury.
"Carlos got a bad tackle on his ankle in the first half and the longer he played the worse it got," Ferguson added.
"We had to bring him off and we will assess him to see what damage there is. Obviously, he is doubtful for Saturday now."
