    Fergie backs Scholes' return

    04 Oct 2008 - 14:17:22

Sir Alex Ferguson has denied claims that Paul Scholes' latest injury could signal the end of the veteran midfielder's Manchester United career.

The 33-year-old faces the next ten weeks on the sidelines after suffering knee ligament damage during Tuesday's Champions League victory over Aalborg BK in Denmark.

Scholes has been plagued by a succession of injuries during the past three seasons but, after handing the former England international a new one-year contract on Friday, Ferguson is confident he can return from his latest lay-off.

"I'm very confident Paul will be back," he said. "He can play for at least another year. I have no fears about that.

"He has the same characteristics as Gary Neville, who has just come back after 18 months out.

"They look after themselves and you have to admire that perseverance and determination."

Scholes, who joined the Old Trafford club as a 14-year-old, has made more than 400 league appearances for United.
