Fergie admits Rooney error
19 Feb 2010 - 11:31:33
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Wayne Rooney is benefiting from playing in a more attacking role this season.
The 24-year-old scored a brace in Tuesday's Champions League victory at AC Milan to bring his goal tally for the season up to an impressive 25.
Ferguson has admitted that he played Rooney on the flanks or in a more deep-lying role last term because of Cristiano Ronaldo's form and accepts that may have been to the England star's detriment.
He said: "We probably didn't use him properly last season. We probably exploited his eagerness and enthusiasm to play anywhere. But we know his strengths, we know where he's best and that's where we're using him this season.
"We talk about world-class players and I think that's a misused quote a lot of the time but, when you see his performances of late, you know you're talking about a really world-class player.
"He's now on 25 goals and there are still 14 or 15 matches to go, maybe more depending on how we do in Europe."
