Fergie: United deserved to lose
31 Mar 2010 - 07:42:57
Sir Alex Ferguson admitted Manchester United deserved to lose the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.
The Red Devils raced into a second-minute lead after Wayne Rooney converted a Nani free-kick.
However, two goals in the final 14 minutes - the second from Ivica Olic in stoppage-time - inflicted a rare European defeat on the visitors.
Throughout the 90 minutes, Ferguson cut a frustrated figure in the technical area after his side constantly gave away possession and afterwards the United boss pulled no punches in his assessment.
"We didn't play well enough to be honest, we kept giving the ball away," he said. "We caused our own defeat.
"We gave the ball away far too easily from minute one. It is a part of our game we pride ourselves on and has been part of the reason for our progress. But that was really disappointing for me.
"Bayern were the better team, we can't complain about that, but we're better than that in possession."
Ferguson also admitted that Edwin van der Sar had kept his side in the game after a string of impressive saves from the veteran Dutch goalkeeper.
"Edwin saved us time and time again," he added. "He made so many fantastic saves and kept us in the game.
"Yes, we had some chances but Edwin kept us in the game.
"It wasn't a good goal to lose but the second leg is at home and I believe we have a strong chance."
