Fergie - Owen will shine

Sir Alex Ferguson is confident that summer signing Michael Owen will silence the doubters during the upcoming Premier League season. The Manchester United manager snapped up the 29-year-old on a free transfer from Newcastle in July after his contract at St James' Park expired. Owen has figured prominently in his new side's pre-season campaign, scoring four times and looking lively in front of goal against Valencia on Wednesday night. However, he has had to fend off questions over his ability to produce at the top level, after numerous injuries forced him to spend much of his time at Newcastle on the sidelines. But although Ferguson realises that the former Liverpool striker may not be an ever-present in the side, he insists that he will regularly hit the back of the net. "Michael may have reached the stage in his career where he won't figure in every game - but he'll score a lot of goals for us," the United boss told The Sun. Surprise"It'll be in keeping with his tremendous record throughout his career for England, Liverpool and Newcastle." Ferguson believes that Owen can draw inspiration from new team-mate Paul Scholes, who has come back from his own injury troubles to consolidate his place as a key squad member. "Michael was perhaps our most controversial summer signing but I believe he'll continue to surprise people. "There seems to be constant debate about the injuries he's picked up over the years but look at Paul Scholes. "He's had two or three injuries and he's always come back. So we are not worried about Michael. "If players have the resolve to get back then they always will and there's no doubt Michael still loves the game and is hungry to play."
