FA warns Rooney for comment
09 Nov 2009 - 17:13:31
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been warned as to his future conduct by the Football Association.
The England international was seen on TV mouthing the words "12 men" after his side's 1-0 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday, a comment that was believed to be about referee Martin Atkinson's performance at Stamford Bridge.
Atkinson had earlier booked Rooney for protesting about Chelsea's winner.
United were unhappy that the free-kick that led to the Blues' goal being scored by John Terry should not have been awarded and thought Didier Drogba pushed Wes Brown to the ground when the ball was whipped in.
An FA spokesman confirmed: "Wayne Rooney has been warned as to his future conduct following remarks made yesterday."
However, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will not face any action following his criticism of the referee.
Ferguson condemned the decision to award the free-kick that led to Chelsea's winning goal as "absolutely ridiculous" and said such decisions mean people "lose faith in refereeing".
