The Football Association has moved quickly to deny claims that England boss Steve McClaren has consulted his senior players to see if he should recall David Beckham.
A Sunday newspaper suggested the Real Madrid star could play in next month's crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel following a succession of poor displays by the England team.
McClaren has not picked Beckham since replacing Sven-Goran Eriksson as England boss last summer.
The FA's director of communications Adrian Bevington said: "I've spoken to Steve McClaren regarding this story.
"He categorically stated that there's no truth whatsoever in this."
Beckham stood down as captain last July after England's exit from the World Cup finals.
