Edwin extends United stay
22 Dec 2007 - 11:32:14
Veteran Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has penned a new one-year contract to extend his stay with Manchester United until the summer of 2009.
The 37-year-old former Ajax and Juventus custodian joined the Red Devils from Fulham in the summer of 2005 and has proved to be a reliable presence between the sticks for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.
"Edwin has signed a new contract for another year totally as a player," Ferguson confirmed. "We are pleased with that. His consistency and experience has been a great help to this club.
"Edwin is number one at the moment, so he has a chance of being number one next season.
"But you cannot guarantee players' positions and tell them they are going to be in the team.
"Edwin will want to be number one, but Ben Foster will be back and I am sure he will want to be number one too. That is great competition to have."
Van der Sar has made well over 100 appearances for United to date, while he is also his country's all-time appearance record holder, although he will retire from duty with the Netherlands after next summer's European Championship finals.
