David Sadler column

I have a feeling that they might be installing revolving doors at Old Trafford this summer. If the money is there to be spent and the right players are available, I think there could be a few comings and goings. There have been some great contributions this season from United players. Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra and Darren Fletcher have been fantastic. Nani has provided hard evidence that what we suspected might be in his locker is actually there. Antonio Valencia got better and better as the season went on and I think he will go from strength to strength. Paul Scholes provided me with the major highlight of the season with his masterclass performance at City in the league. Ryan Giggs has had his moments and Edwin Van der Sar has a great case to be challenging Peter Schmeichel and Alex Stepney as the Reds greatest number one. But there have been disappointments and there are a number of question marks over Sir Alex Ferguson's squad for one reason or another. Michael Owen could have been the signing of the season but I don't think that ever really worked. I've stuck by Dimitar Berbatov through thin and thin and I still don't see any wisdom in casting him aside. However, there's no doubt the forward department needs addressing. We cannot hope to get through another term with the same question marks. Real Madrid's Karim Benzema is the popular choice and I would back that. But nearer to home I would champion Bobby Zamora at Fulham and Kevin Doyle at Wolves. In midfield, Fergie's alternative first-choices like Ji-sung Park, Michael Carrick and Anderson have all disappointed largely. Owen Hargreaves appeared for just a few seconds. You have to wonder about all their futures at Old Trafford. Wesley Schneider at Inter Milan would be my choice if you could prise him from Italy. In defence it is great to think we have the world's best central defender in Rio Ferdinand but his fitness record this season doesn't augur well. Same goes with Wes Brown. Chris Smalling will come in from Fulham but he seems to be one for the future so an experienced defender must be on the wanted list.
