David Beckham, more than just a pretty face
You could see the backlash from football fans coming a mile off in the wake of Beckham's retirement.
When it comes to labeling Becks as a player, most of us have jumped on the bandwagon labeling him an overrated celebrity footballer, more about commerce than ability.
For me, it all boils down to what he’s achieved in his years as a top-flight player - One Champions League winner’s medal, six Premier League titles, a La Liga title, two MLS titles and more recently, a Ligue 1 title.
Oh, and 115 England caps and the fact that he was the best crosser of the ball of his generation and, despite the fame, one of the hardest workers the game has ever seen.
Nice-looking mediocrities don’t achieve that kind of success, no matter how popular they are.
Beckham may not have been in the same league as the likes of Zidane, Messi, Bobby Moor or Sir Bobby Charlton, and he never claimed to be.
But for those criticising him, saying he never possessed that electrifying presence of those mentioned, surely we should celebrate what he did manage to achieve, not what he couldn't.
