City joint top after five goal thriller
Published: 21 Aug 2011 - 19:30:01
Manchester City and Wolves are setting the pace at the top of the Premier League after making it two wins out of two on Sunday. City turned in an impressive display as they ran out 3-2 winners at Bolton, while Mick McCarthy's side took all three points from their 2-0 victory over Fulham thanks to goals by Kevin Doyle and Matthew Jarvis.David Silva set City on their way at the Reebok Stadium with a shot from the edge of the area in the 26th minute, that should have been kept out by Trotters keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. The visitors soon doubled their advantage through Gareth Barry's rocket from distance before Ivan Klasnic pulled one back for Bolton minutes later. However, hopes of a recovery from Owen Coyle's men were effectively ended when the impressive Edin Dzeko restored City's two-goal advantage within two minutes of the restart.Kevin Davies did make life interesting when he headed a fifth goal of the game from a free-kick in the 63th minute but that effort proved to be the last of the goalscoring for the afternoon.Elsewhere at Molineux, Wolves scored both of their goals in a five minute spell just before half-time, with the first coming about after some nice link-up play between Doyle and Jarvis, which ended with the Republic of Ireland international smashed a shot past Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer.Jarvis then doubled the hosts' advantage with half-time looming as he pounced on a header off the woodwork to put Mick McCarthy's side firmly in charge.Meanwhile, Norwich City are still waiting for their first win back in the big-time after Kenwyne Jones' stoppage time equaliser for Stoke in a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.Ritchie de Laet had nodded the Canaries into a 37th minute lead and when Jon Walters' saw a second-half penalty saved, Paul Lambert must have been quietly confident of securing all three points, even without Leon Barnett who was red carded for conceding the spot-kick.However, his team were made to pay for sitting back and defending deep as Jones got on the end of Glenn Whelan's excellent cross into the box with time running out.
