Chivu slammed by Fergie
05 Apr 2007 - 08:05:13
Sir Alex Ferguson was angry with AS Roma defender Cristian Chivu for his part in Paul Scholes' sending-off in Manchester United's 2-1 Champions League quarter-final first leg defeat.
Scholes was ordered off ten minutes before half-time in the Stadio Olimpico, with Ferguson unhappy that Romania stopper Chivu had put pressure of German referee Herbert Fandel.
He said after the loss: "I have no complaint about the first booking, but I don't think the referee would have sent him off if Chivu had not gone up to him and waved a card in his face.
"The referee told us this morning that anyone attempting to have a player booked would immediately be dismissed. It appears that is not the case.
"A strong referee would not have sent him off and that decision left us in a very difficult position."
However, looking ahead to the Old Trafford return, Ferguson added: "We are experienced enough to know that playing at home will give us a big advantage.
"Hopefully that will be the case next week. I am looking forward to it and if we score I believe we will go through."
