Carrick urges Tevez to stay
24 Apr 2009 - 07:37:57
Michael Carrick has urged unsettled team-mate Carlos Tevez to remain at Manchester United.
Tevez's long-term future at Old Trafford has been brought into question after the Argentina striker admitted earlier in the week that a lack of starting opportunities this season could force him to find a new club in the summer.
The 25-year-old striker has been on loan at United for the last two seasons but is becoming increasingly concerned that Sir Alex Ferguson does not want the switch to be made permanent.
But after scoring 13 goals in 31 starts in all competitions this season, midfielder Carrick is hoping Tevez decides to stay with the Red Devils.
"We want him to stay, Carlos is a top player," Carrick told The Sun.
"He has scored some very important goals for us over the last few years.
"We've got a world-class squad, we've got world-class players and Carlos is one of them.
"We want to keep moving forward as a team and as a squad so we'd like to keep our best players here.
"But it's down to the manager. I'm sure he knows the best way to make sure we do keep progressing."
Meanwhile, Carrick has defended Dimitar Berbatov following claims that the £30million Bulgaria striker has been a flop in his first season at Old Trafford.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker has been under-fire this week following his lacklustre penalty shootout miss in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Everton last Sunday.
"He's a vital player for us and I think he'll show that in these important games we've got coming up," added Carrick.
"There's no doubt he'll come good and he's only going to get better the longer he stays at United. The fans will see what a top-drawer player he is."
