Brown pushes United claims

Manchester United defender Wes Brown has boosted his claims of a recall after coming through a reserve game unscathed. Brown has endured an injury-plagued last 12 months and was restricted to just 13 appearances for the Premier League champions last season. He picked up a thigh injury in pre-season, but returned to make a substitute's appearance against Birmingham City in the opening game of the campaign. United's injury problems also saw Brown start the shock 1-0 defeat at Burnley last week, only for the England international to be replaced in the second half after a sluggish display. The 29-year-old was left out of Saturday's 5-0 win at Wigan, but played almost an hour for the reserves on Monday night against Bolton. With Rio Ferdinand out for at least another three weeks, and Jonny Evans plagued by an ankle complaint, Brown could come into contention for this weekend's visit of Arsenal. If Evans is ruled out of Saturday's clash at Old Trafford, then Brown will vie with John O'Shea to partner the fit-again Nemanja Vidic in the centre of defence.
