Are United two good?

Published: 18 May 2009 - 16:09:02

It has been suggested in many quarters that one of the main reasons behind Manchester United's Premier League success is the strength of their squad. With so many top-class international footballers at his disposal, it is becoming increasingly difficult for Sir Alex Ferguson to decide who should start every week. In fact, such is the depth in the Old Trafford dressing room that you could probably pick entirely different starting XIs - and both would be competitive in the Premier League. To test out that theory, Sky Sports News asked Alan Mullery and Tony Gale to take it in turns to pick their own team from Sir Alex's squad - just as you used to do in the playground. Alan had the luxury of going first and came up with the following side: GK: Edwin van der Sar RB: Rafael CB: Rio Ferdinand CB: Jonny Evans LB: Patrice Evra RM: Cristiano Ronaldo CM: Paul Scholes CM: Anderson LM: Ryan Giggs F: Wayne Rooney F: Dimitar Berbatov Tony picked each position second and ended up with this team: GK: Ben Foster RB: Gary Neville CB: Nemanja Vidic CB: Wes Brown LB: John O'Shea RM: Ji-Sung Park CM: Michael Carrick CM: Darren Fletcher LM: Nani F: Carlos Tevez F: Federico Macheda Tony admitted that Alan's team was slightly stronger, as he had gone first, but who do you think would come out on top if these two sides played each other? And more importantly, if these two teams were to compete in the Premier League, where do you think they would finish. Let us know your thoughts using the feedback form below - and spare a thought for poor Owen Hargreaves who didn't make it into either team!
