Are United planning a swoop for Real Madrid star if Rooney leaves?
New Manchester United manager David Moyes may be about to do a bit of wheeling and dealing in the transfer market to get his reign as the new Old Trafford supremo off to a flying start. The Scot’s appointment will do little to dampen the wanderlust of Wayne Rooney, as thy famously had an acrimonious fall out a few years ago. It may be therefore that one of Moyes’s first acts as manager will be to sign off the sale of the talismanic player. That will clearly leave a vacancy to fill. Whilst Polish striker Robert Lewandowski remains a target, it seems likely that he will shortly be bound for Bayern, so the reds may have to switch their focus to Spain.
Karim Benzema has been a long term target for Manchester United. It was claimed that when the player was at Lyon, following a game against the Reds, in the tunnel after the final whistle, he was gifted a Manchester United shirt by Sir Alex Ferguson. Whether that’s true or not, the Old Trafford outfit have kept close tabs on the French International. The striker’s stock has fallen somewhat at Madrid, and under Jose Mourinho almost had a ‘job share’ with Gonzalo Higuain as a partner for Cristiano Ronaldo, at the head of the club’s attack. After four years and over 120 games for Madrid, netting over a half century of goals, it’s thought that it may now be an opportune moment for United to firm up their interest.
With Mourinho apparently destined to leave the club this summer, a new manager will be in place for next season, and as is always the case, he will bring a shopping list of the players he requires, meaning that Benzema may be surplus to requirements. It may therefore be an ideal time for United to jump in and cut a low price deal.
Still only 25, Benzema may be the ideal foil for United’s flying Dutchman Robin van Persie, and just the player to assuage the fans’ lament at losing Rooney. It may be that years after Ferguson handed the player that shirt, his successor may be about to do the same, but this time for keeps.
