Manchester City defender Ben Thatcher has accepted the eight-match ban handed down by the Football Association for his horror challenge on Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes.
Thatcher had already been suspended for four games by City, but now faces a more lengthy spell on the sidelines, with the threat of a further suspended 15-game ban hanging over his head for two years.
Thatcher's barrister, Rupert Bowers, said: "Mr Thatcher deeply regrets the incident.
"He accepted the punishment from his club and that penalty has been increased by the FA. Mr Thatcher similarly accepts the FA's decision without question.
"He again expresses his apologies to all concerned, he now wishes to serve his suspension, put the incident behind him and continue with his career."
