Sven backs City youngsters

06 Aug 2007 - 07:17:05

Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson insists that he will develop the young talent at the club, despite bringing in a number of overseas players since taking charge at Eastlands.

Eriksson's eight new signings are all from outside of the Premier League, but the Swede has backed the likes of Micah Richards, Nedum Onuoha and Michael Johnson to provide a homegrown element to his side.

He said: "Of course there is room for people like Johnson and Stephen Ireland. They are excellent players.

"They showed that last season and they are going to get better and better. It is the same with Onuoha and Richards. They are extremely good talents and they will both play a lot of games.

"I am not saying they will play 38 leagues, maybe no-one will do that. But they will play a lot. They are part of the future for this club.

"Of course it is difficult trying to make a team in less than a month but I don't just like that pressure, I love it.

"I have just had a year completely without pressure and I didn't enjoy that at all.

"It is important we get off to a good start, but I know this team will get better and better. I am very optimistic for the future and I am very happy."
