The Paraguayan striker looked set to leave Eastlands for Rome at the start of the week ? but the deal broke down just before Tuesday?s transfer deadline. Lazio wanted to take him on a season?s loan with a view to a £6.5m permanent deal in 12 months? time, and are still interested in taking the former Blackburn forward. Robinho?s departure for AC Milan ensured there was room for Santa Cruz in Roberto Mancini?s 25-man Premier League squad. But the 29-year-old has acknowledged that he is behind Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Mario Balotelli and Jo in the striker pecking order, and that his chances will be limited this season. Santa Cruz admitted shortly after the Lazio deal collapsed that he would love to be reunited with Mark Hughes at Fulham. Hughes brought the striker to Blackburn from Bayern Munich for £3.5m three years ago, then took him to City for £17m last summer. Lazio president Claudio Lotito was keen to complete a deal for Santa Cruz earlier this week despite the fact that the club already have six players who can operate up front. Lotito was cautious when asked if he would make another move for him in January but it is understood that he does want to do a deal. The Lazio president said: ?It?s a disappointment. But we have decided to take time and wait for the market in January to consider whether he will be a necessary inclusion. ?In that role, we already have Mauro Zarate, Sergio Floccari, Pasquale Foggia and Tommaso Rocchi. ?Hernanes can also play in attack, not to mention Libor Kozak. So we?ll look at the market again in the winter.?
