Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce hopes to add Tottenham striker Mido and former Rangers left-back Michael Ball to his squad before the transfer window closes on Wednesday.
Egyptian striker Mido, who scored in Spurs' FA Cup win against Southend United at the weekend, will cost in the region of £3million, while Ball is currently on trial at Eastlands.
"We believe we're closer to bringing players in," Pearce told the Manchester Evening News.
"I'm more optimistic today than I was yesterday and yesterday I was more optimistic than I was the day before that.
"The whole of the window we've been chasing and the chief exec and myself have been working hard. One or two new faces will help us greatly.
"Michael Ball has had two or three days training with us and has fitted in reasonably well.
"He came to the game yesterday to support the team. We've agreed to reach a decision by tomorrow. If all goes well and he keeps doing what he is doing then he might have a chance.''
