Kompany relishes competition

Manchester City midfielder Vincent Kompany is relishing the competition for first-team places at Eastlands. The Belgium international came on against Wigan last weekend after a spell on the sidelines through injury, and is now ready to fight for his place in the side. Kompany, who was signed from Hamburg for 6million, is enjoying life with his new-look side, and hopes to prove to manager Mark Hughes that he is worthy of a first-team berth. "The competition in the team is perfect," he said in the Sunday Mirror. "I've always had the highest ambitions for my career and this club is moving forward to those things. "I am 23. If I keep working and pushing as I am, I'm going to be a serious option for the manager. "I'm going to be a reliable player and then I hope to become a big player at this club." City have made a bright start to the Premier League campaign after Mark Hughes bolstered his squad with a number of big-money signings, and the Blues have been tipped to mount a top-four challenge this term. "Last season we had a squad with a lot of talent and that should not be underestimated," Kompany added. "It's just that the players that have come in have a wining mentality. So now we have even more quality and this mentality."
