    Johnson commits to Citizens

    17 Sep 2008 - 07:29:29

Manchester City have secured the long-term future of Michael Johnson after the midfielder signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2013.

The 20-year-old midfielder had been linked with a move away from Eastlands following reports of interest from Arsenal and Liverpool.

But the England Under-21 international, who progressed through the club's academy ranks and made his debut in October 2006, has now put pen to paper on a new five-year contract.

Johnson had been an ever-present for Mark Hughes side this season before missing last weekend's defeat to Chelsea with a groin injury.

However, he is expected to return for Thursday's UEFA Cup first round tie with Omonia Nicosia.

"The games are coming thick and fast at the moment and I have to be mindful of that," Hughes told the club's official website.

"We will have to use the squad because it's a big ask going into European games, Carling Cup games and some very difficult Premier League games."
