Manchester City have promoted reserve team manager Kenny Jackett to the position of Sven-Goran Eriksson's assistant while Hans Backe is away from the club.
Backe has been forced to return home to Sweden to an illness in his family, with former Watford and Swansea City boss Jackett stepping into the breach for the time being.
Eriksson told the club's official website: "As the situation is today, it could stay like this for a while, Hans is temporarily out.
"He's back in Sweden because of an illness in the family, which I'm sorry about, but that is a fact.
"At the moment Kenny Jackett from the reserves is coming up with us and Ian Miller will take the reserves. That will be the solution for the moment.
"It's a temporary thing and we all hope strongly that Hans is back with us again soon."
The vastly-experienced Backe joined the Citizens along with Eriksson this summer, having previously made his name as a coach by winning four Danish league titles with AaB Aalborg and FC Copenhagen.
