Ireland calm over contract
28 May 2009 - 08:48:23
Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland claims there is no need to panic over his contract situation.
Ireland, 22, recently claimed he was a 'long way' for reaching agreement with the club over a new contract.
But with two years still remaining on his existing deal, the recently crowned player of the year is not unduly concerned over the lack of progress made since City revealed they had opened negotiations last month.
"I don't think the contract is a major issue for people to look at," said Ireland.
"I am going to be here regardless. I have more than two years left on my current deal so it is not close to running out or anything.
"We are in talks and, fingers crossed, if they go well it will all be done as soon as possible so I can enjoy the summer and look forward to pre-season."
Meanwhile, Ireland is pleased that the City board recently came out in support of manager Mark Hughes following a season which failed to bring European qualification.
He added: "I am really happy that the manager's future has been sorted out and happy for the club too because I know there might be doubts in people's heads right now.
"But in time they will realise he is the right man."
