China defender Sun Jihai looks set to miss the start of Manchester City's Premiership campaign because of a hamstring injury.
The problem prevented the 28-year-old playing in either of City's games in the World Series Tournament in Shanghai last weekend and he will also miss China's Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore next Wednesday.
City start their domestic campaign against Chelsea on August 20 and manager Stuart Pearce fears Jihai will not recover in time.
"Jihai will come back with us to England," Pearce told the club's official website.
"He has a hamstring injury which we tried to deal with in China but after a fitness test on Sunday Jihai told me he was still unable to play.
"He needs to come back and have that treated before he can think about playing again."
