Goalkeeper target will cost Manchester City 20 million
Malaga have slapped an astonishing £20million price-tag on goalkeeper Willy Caballero as Manchester City’s pursuit of the Argentinian gathers momentum.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini is reported to be in the market for a new goalkeeper due to Joe Hart’s inconsistency.
It is believed Pellegrini doesn’t fancy reserve keeper Costel Pantilimon much either, with a new goalkeeper a priority for the Chilean as he looks to build his own team at the Etihad.
Hart’s displays this season have been below par, to put it mildly, but it is a surprise to see Pellegrini actively seeking a replacement as the England international should have it in him to return a better keeper.
Pellegrini fancies Caballero as he worked with him at Malaga, but the Spanish club say anyone wanting to buy the Argentinian must meet his release clause, believed to be £20m.
“We will not sell Willy Caballero,” said Malaga director general Vicente Casado.
“He will not leave unless someone pays his release clause and he is in agreement. At the moment we are focused on building the squad.”
Despite the hands-off warning, Manchester City are expected to send scouts to watch all of Caballero’s games until January.
Caballero could be a decent signing, if even only to get the best out of Joe Hart, but £20m is a lot of money for a player in his 30's.
