Given believes City can challenge

07 Jul 2010 - 15:58:48

Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given has insisted the side is ready to challenge Chelsea and fierce rivals Manchester United at the top of the Premier League this term.

Manager Roberto Mancini has already been given the licence to spend during the pre-season, with defender Jerome Boateng, midfielder Yaya Toure and winger David Silva entering the City of Manchester Stadium for a total of around £60million.

With further signings likely to bolster the squad further, Given now feels they should be knocking on the door.

Speaking to reporters, the Republic of Ireland shot-stopper said: "We're at the point where the club has invested so much and the manager understands and knows that the pressure is on to get results and trophies.

"City have the backing to challenge the top teams in England and even in Europe in years to come. I don't want to say we are going into the league to finish fourth.

"We are going in to win it and if we don't, the next thing will be the top four.

"But with our squad, we've got to be looking to challenge Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal."
