Manchester City's hopes of signing Freddie Ljungberg have been scuppered after the player's agent claimed the Arsenal midfielder would not consider signing for another English club.
The 30-year-old Sweden international is expected to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer after struggling with injury and a loss of form during the past 18 months.
Ljungberg's agent has already held preliminary talks with Fiorentina over a possible move and Italy looks his most likely destination after Claes Elefalk claimed the former Halmstads midfielder would not sign for another Premier League club.
New Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson had been linked with a move for his compatriot since taking the reins at Eastlands.
"He has earlier said that due to his respect for the Arsenal fans he can't play for another English club," Elefalk told Swedish news agency TT.
However, Elefalk has warned that a deal with Fiorentina is still far from being completed.
He added: "Arsenal are demanding more than the offer Fiorentina have tabled.
"The clubs have to reach an agreement first, then we will sit down and discuss an eventual offer.
"We haven't reached that stage yet.''
