Dzeko looks set for Wolfsburg stay
Published : 01 Jun 2010 11:43:00
Wolfsburg have said striker Edin Dzeko will remain at the German side next season after the club received no offer matching his release clause. Dzeko has been touted as a possible big-money transfer to one of Europe's big names, with the likes of Manchester United and neighbours City both believed to be interested in capturing his services. The highly-rated Bosnian netted 22 goals in 34 Bundesliga outings last season and was free to leave the Volkswagen Arena on Monday had a release clause in his contract been met. No offer for the 40million euros (£35million) fee was forthcoming, though, and Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hoeness revealed the 24-year-old would be staying put. The news will come as a huge boost to new Wolves coach Steve McClaren, who had described the front man as "immensely important" to his side's cause ahead of the new season. McClaren has been charged with reversing the club's fortunes next term after a disappointing eighth-placed finish last time out. The ambitious outfit are looking to challenge for honours at the top of the table after winning the title in 2009 and Hoeness said in a statement: "The conditions have not been met. "We are very pleased that the period of uncertainty is over. He is a player of huge quality who would have been very difficult for us to replace."
