Dzeko aims high after breaking duck
Edin Dzeko has the Champions League in his sights after scoring his debut goal in the Barclays Premier League.
The Bosnia striker got the winner for Manchester City in Monday night's 1-0 victory against Blackburn at Ewood Park. It was the 27-year-old's 10th appearance in England's top flight following his £27million transfer from Wolfsburg in January.
City are now four points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham, and Dzeko said: "We have five more league games to play and we have to win the next one as it is at home."
Dzeko amassed an impressive 66 goals in 111 Bundesliga games and earned a lucrative four-and-a-half-year deal with City in the process. However it has been a frustrating three months for him with his four goals coming with a brace in the FA Cup against Notts County and another pair in the Europa League against Aris Salonika.
Yet all that was forgotten on Monday as he smashed the ball home in the 75th minute three minutes after stepping off the bench following a misplaced clearance by Phil Jones.
He added: "It was a very tough game against Blackburn, very difficult with too many long balls. But we won and that's important.
"Sometimes you don't have to play from the beginning to score. Sometimes you can't score from a lot of chances and sometimes you get one chance and you score. That's football.
"I want to thank the fans for giving me big support. Even though I wasn't scoring, the fans were behind me."
Former England manager Steve McClaren sanctioned Dzeko's move only to be dismissed as Wolfsburg coach weeks later after six months in charge. Commentating for Five Live, he saw Dzeko break his duck in the league and the two men enjoyed a quick chat after the game.
McClaren has always stated that he thought the Bosnian would come good, and Dzeko said: "We were together in Wolfsburg and we had a good relationship. He is happy for me that I scored."
