Contrite Adebayor says sorry
13 Sep 2009 - 11:19:30
Emmanuel Adebayor has said sorry after appearing to taunt Arsenal supporters following his goal in Manchester City's 4-2 win over the Gunners at Eastlands.
Adebayor left Arsenal for City in a £25million deal during the summer transfer window and has since criticised the Gunners supporters for not supporting him.
The Togo striker then opted to celebrate his headed effort - City's third goal of the afternoon - in front of them after running the full length of the pitch.
"To be honest, I'm very sorry for all this," explained Adebayor. "Sometimes, the emotion takes over. That's what happened. I was very happy to score the goal.
"Before the game, people have been saying and writing things and the emotions took over. People who love me and know me know how I behave."
Meanwhile, City boss Mark Hughes is hoping his striker does not find himself in hot water wit the Football Association for his antics.
"We're hopeful that the game itself will be the shining light rather than any one incident," said Hughes.
"We don't want it to cast a shadow on an outstanding game, but we will have to see what happens."
