Manchester City have signed Ecuador striker Felipe Caicedo in a £5.2million deal from Swiss side FC Basel.
The 19-year-old forward was awarded a work permit on Thursday afternoon which enabled him to sign a four-and-a-half year contract at the City of Manchester Stadium.
City boss Sven Goran-Eriksson was desperate to bolster his striking options after allowing Rolando Bianchi and Giorgios Samaras to leave on loan this month.
The Swede has also seen new signing Nery Castillo join Valeri Bojinov on the treatment table with a dislocated shoulder.
City are believed to have beaten off a host of clubs from across Europe in the race to sign Caicedo.
The likes of Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Juventus were all said to be monitoring the teenager, who rose to prominence during last year's Copa America.
Meanwhile, the Citizens continue to be linked with a move for Portsmouth striker Benjani Mwaruwari.
Elsewhere, unsettled midfielder Ousmane Dabo has returned to Lazio after an unhappy spell in the Premier League.
