    City won't punish Bellamy

    22 Sep 2009 - 08:05:41

Manchester City have confirmed that they will not be disciplining Craig Bellamy after the Wales international appeared to strike a Manchester United fan after Sunday's derby clash at Old Trafford.

The police and the Football Association are both looking at the incident that occurred on the pitch after the final whistle in United's 4-3 victory.

But when asked if the club would be taking any action against Bellamy, City's assistant boss Mark Bowen said: "No. I don't think there's any need to.

"My take is that he thought the fella might spit in his face or something. He came very close and moved towards him. Craig, with an open hand, just pushed the fella away."

Greater Manchester Police have charged the fan for entering the playing area "without lawful authority" while the FA have said that they: "are investigating the incident and will be looking at the referee's match report."

It is also believed that the FA will charge Gary Neville for his over-zealous reaction to United's last-gasp fourth goal.

In a highly-charged encounter, City substitute Javier Garrido was struck by a coin thrown from the home section of the stadium at half-time.
