Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce is keen to tie Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Ireland down to a new long-term deal.
Ireland, 20, has forced his way back into the City line-up in recent weeks after being overlooked for the opening few months of the campaign.
The City academy graduate also scored a vital winner for a lacklustre Republic of Ireland in Wednesday's 2-1 victory over San Marino.
"I spoke with Stephen three weeks ago and offered him a new contract even though he has a lengthy one already," confirmed Pearce.
"It is a credit to what he has done this season that we feel it is the right time to talk to him.
"In situations like this, the ball is always in the player's court. If he is doing well, he will get rewarded."
