Manchester City have put contract talks with captain Richard Dunne on hold until the end of the season.
The Republic of Ireland international has little over 12 months remaining on his existing contract and his representatives had been in talks over extending his seven-and-a-half year stay at the club for the past few months.
Those talks have now been shelved until the summer which had led to speculation linking the 28-year-old with moves to Newcastle United and Sunderland.
However, City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson remains confident the former Everton defender will extend his stay at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Dunne has made almost 300 appearances for the Citizens following a £3million arrival in 2000.
"I really don't know where we are in terms of progress on Richard's contract but, with six games to go, I think it is more an end-of-season discussion," Eriksson told the told club's official website.
"He has a contract for one more year so it is not a pressing problem.
"We don't want to lose him and I am quite sure he wants to stay here."
