City hope to snare Bentley
01 Sep 2009 - 08:30:41
Manchester City look set to complete the signing of David Bentley from Tottenham Hotspur in a player-plus-cash deal.
The 25-year-old midfielder is believed to be heading to Eastlands in exchange for City's Bulgaria international wideman Martin Petrov.
Bentley has struggled to make an impact at Spurs following his £12million arrival from Blackburn Rovers last summer.
However, he is well known to City boss Mark Hughes after the pair worked together at Ewood Park.
Everton, Aston Villa and Sunderland have also been linked with moves for the England midfielder this summer, but Bentley now looks set to be the latest player to be heading through the arrival door at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Bentley is desperate to kick-start his career with a place in Fabio Capello's England squad for next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa up for grabs.
Meanwhile, Petrov is believed to have returned from international duty in order to finalise his own part of the deal.
The 30-year-old winger has struggled to break into the first-team picture at City after missing most of last season with a serious knee ligament injury.
