City: Right move for Robinho
18 Sep 2008 - 08:41:46
Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has rejected claims from Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster that Robinho has joined a "mediocre club".
Schuster criticised the Brazil international earlier in the week following his decision to swap Spain for Eastlands in a £33million transfer deadline day deal.
"From a sports point of view, for me it is a disappointment because Robinho had everything here to triumph," he claimed.
"But you have to respect his dream to be a good player at a mediocre club in England."
However, Hughes has hit back at his counterpart after suggesting the 24-year-old forward - who scored on his debut as City lost 3-1 to Chelsea last weekend - has joined his club for the right reasons.
"He's obviously a bit emotional about the situation," he claimed.
"He's lost one of his better players and I know for a fact he didn't want to lose him.
"Irrespective of what other people think, we're trying to go in the right direction and that's what Robinho has seen.
"He's not come to a club that's going to be mid-table for the next few years, he's come to a club that he feels is going places.
"Maybe in the next few years we can change Schuster's view on Robinho's decision.
"I think he knows what is happening. Nobody usually goes to a club like Real Madrid and takes one of their best players."
